5.18항쟁기간에 광주시민들은 올바른 뜻을 함께 나누고 서로 격려하며 죽음과 두려움 앞에서도 올바르지 않은 것에는 분연히 항쟁하였습니다.

자율적으로 참여하고 스스로 질서를 유지하고 단 한건의 범죄도 일어나지 않을 정도로 눈부신 시민정신과 드높은 자치정신을 발휘했습니다.

한 마음 한 뜻이 되어, 피가 부족하다는 소식이 전해지면 헌혈을 하겠다는 이들이 병원 앞에 어느덧 모여들어 길게 줄을 섰고
민주주의를 위해 목숨내 놓고 일어난 시민군들, 행여 기운 잃을세라 시민들은 너나없이 모여들어 솥을 걸고 밥을 지어 먹였습니다.

"기운내거라~ 내 자식들..."
모두 다 어머니의 심정이 되어 광주의 시민들은 피를 나눠주고 먹을 것을 건네주었습니다.
그렇게 건네준 주먹밥과 물 한 바가지에 담긴 마음을 함께 나누며 시민군들은 힘을 얻었고 목숨을 바쳐 숭고한 "오월정신'을 끝끝내 지켜냈습니다.

그 당시 일어난 5.18 사건은 지금 생각해도 말이 되지 않고, 믿을 수 없는 일들입니다. 두려웠을테지만 그에 맞써 싸워주신 5.18 민주 영령들의 숭고한 희생을 절대 잊지 않겠습니다.
